               ex) To know is one thing, to practice is quite another.

               ex) It is difficult to learn a foreign language by oneself.

               ex) The new method of refrigeration made it possible

                    to transport perishable food.

               ex) To see is to believe.

               ex) I told him to hand in the report by next Monday.

               ex) I will show you where to live in.

               ex) This is a net to catch fish with.

               ex) He is to arrive at 7 in the morning.(예정)

               ex) You are to finish the work by tomorrow.(의무)

               ex) If you are to succeed, you must work hard.

               ex) We eat to live, but animals live to eat.

               ex) He worked really hard so as to pass the exam.

             * 결과 : ~해보니~, ~해서~

               ex) The boy grew up to be a general.

               ex) He worked so hard as to pass the exams.

             * 원인 : ~하니, ~해서

               ex) I am glad to meet you.

               ex) We are so surprised to hear that he had

                    already died.

             * 조건 : 만약 ~한다면

               ex) To hear him speak English, you would take him for

                    a native.

             * 양보 : ~하더라도

               ex) To see it, you would not believe it.

             * 이유나 판단의 근거 : ~하다니

               ex) He must be a fool to believe such a thing.

               ex) You are a happy man to have such a nice wife.

             * 기타 : 형용사나 부사를 수식하고 대부분 ‘~하기에’로 해석됨.

               ex) This question is difficult to answer.

               ex) He is too old to swim.

               ex) He is sute to come.

             * 독립부정사 : 관용적인 표현으로서 독립적인 부사구로 사용된다.

               ex) to be sure (=for sure)        : 확실히

                   so to speak (=as it were)    : 이를테면, 말하자면

                   needless to say              : 말할 필요도 없이

                   to tell the truth               : 진실을 말하자면

                   to make matters worse       : 설상가상으로

                   to begin with                 : 우선

                   strange to say                : 이상한 이야기지만

                   to be frank with you          : 솔직히 말해서

                   not to speak of (=let alone)   : ~은 말할 것도 없이

       ② 원형부정사는 “동사원형” 형태와 같다.

          그러나 원형부정사는 동사의 원형과는 다른 개념임을 유의해야한다.

        원형부정사는 그 차체가 품사의 일종이고 문장 속에서 보어역할을 한다.

         이에 반해, 동사원형이란 주어의 수나 인칭, 또는 시제에 따라 변하는

         동사의 여러 형태의 기본(기원)형을 의미한다.

          따라서 동사원형이라는 개념은 품사의 개념이라 보기 힘들고 단순히

          동사의 기본형태를 의미하는 것이다.

        원형부정사의 용법을 살펴본다.

          ⒜ 지각동사, 사역동사, 준사역동사 다음에 행위 주체가 목적어

           로 오고 다음에 목적격 보어가 필요할 때 원형부정사를 쓴다.

             즉 원형부정사는 주로 형용사적 용법(서술적 용법)으로 쓰인다.

             지각동사(구) : see, hear, feel, watch, notice, look at,

                                listen to etc.

             사역동사     : let, make, have, bid etc.

             준사역동사   : help, get etc.

               ex) I saw her play the piano.

               ex) My father made me clean his car.

               ex) The boy helped the old man (to) do the work.

               cf) I got him carry the baggage.

          ⒝ 조동사 + 원형부정사 : 조동사 다음에는 원칙적으로 원형부정사가

                  온다.

             예외적으로 현재분사(진행형)나 과거분사(완료형, 수동태)가 올 수

                  있다.

             이때 “조동사 + 원형부정사”

                    “조동사 + 현재분사”

                    “조동사 + 과거분사"는 모두 동사구라 칭하고 조동사 뒤에

             오는 원형부정사, 현재분사 그리고 과거분사를 본동사라 부른다.

          ⒞ 기타 원형부정사를 사용한 관용구문이 있다.

                문법적으로 설명하기 곤란하므로 외우기 바란다.

                   ex)

                had better + 원형부정사 = ~하는 게 좋다

                cannot but + 원형부정사 = ~하지 않을 수 없다

                do nothing but + 원형부정사 = 오로지 ~하기만 하다

                would rather + 원형부정사 = 차라리 ~하고 싶다

                would rather A(원형부정사) than B(원형부정사)

                = B하느니 차라리 A하겠다

    2) 분사 : 형용사의 기능을 가지는 동사의 형태.

              현재분사와 과거분사가 있으며 형용사의 기능을 하므로 한정용법과

              서술용법으로 쓰인다.

              즉 명사를 수식하거나 주격보어 또는 목적격보어로 쓰인다.

          ⒜ 현재분사 : 형태는 "동사원형 + -ing"이다.

                        진행, 능동, 사역을 의미.

                   ex) an exciting game = a game which excites people

                   ex) a crying girl = a girl who is crying

                   ex) surprising results = results which surprise people

          ⒝ 과거분사 : 규칙과 불규칙 변화가 있다.

                        규칙변화는 과거형과 동일하다.

                        불규칙 변화는 외워야 한다.

                        완료, 수동, 상태를 의미.

                   ex) fallen leaves = leaves which have fallen

                   ex) a returned soldier = a soldier who has returned

                   ex) a wounded soldier = a soldier who is wounded

                   ex) a broken promise = a promise which is broken

         (c) 분사구문 :

                  주절과 분리된 형태로 주절의 주어인 명사를 설명하는 분사이다.

                      분사구문이 구인가, 또는 절인가에 논란이 있으나 통칭대로 분

                      사구문이라 부른다.

                * 시간(~할 때, ~하는 동안)

                   ex) Calling on him, I found him studying his lessons.

                     = When I called on him, I found him studying

                        his lessons.

               * 원인(~이므로)

                   ex) Having nothing to do, I went to bed earlier.

                     = As I had nothing to do, I went to bed earlier.

               * 조건(~한다면)

                   ex) Turning to the right, you will find the building.

                     = If you turn to the right, you will find the building.

                   ex) How happy I would be, being a monkey!

                     = How happy I would be, if I were a monkey!

               * 양보(비록~일지라도)

                   ex) Being a woman, she can't sew.

                     = Though she is a woman, she can't sew.

               * 부수적 동시상황(~하면서)

                   ex) He was reading a newspaper, his wife

                        knitting beside him.

                     = He was reading a newspaper, and his wifed

                        was knitting beside him.

               * 관용적 분사표현(숙어)

                   ex) generally speaking : 일반적으로 말해

                                                 (= If we speak generally)

                       strictly speaking : 엄격히 말하자면

                       roughly speaking : 대략 말하자면

                       frankly speaking : 솔직히 말하면

          (d) 참고로 분사는 예외적으로 명사나 부사적 용법으로 쓰이기도 한다.

             어디까지나 참고이니 흥미로 봐두기 바란다.

                   ex)  The dying and the dead were carried

                         on stretchers.

                   ex)  It's freezing cold. (freezing=very)

    3) 동명사 : 동사적 성질과 명사적 성질을 함께 가지고 있어서 붙인 이름

                      이다. 형태상으로는 현재분사와 같은 “동사원형+ -ing”이다.

          ⒜ 명사적 성질 : 문장 속에서 주어, 보어, 목적어 역할을 한다.

                               ~하는 것, ~하기로 해석한다.

                   ex) Working for others is the greatest happiness.

                   ex) Teaching is learning.

                   ex) She enjoyed playing tennis.

                   ex) I am looking forward to seeing you again.

           ⒝ 동사적 성질 : 문장 속에서 목적어, 보어를 가지며, 부사의

                                수식을 받고 의미상 주어도 가진다.

                   ex) He succeeded in solving the problem.

                   ex) They insisted on paying the money.

                   ex) I am not ashamed of being poor.

                   ex) Do you mind my smoking here?

                   ex) He complained of the train being late.

                   ex) I admitted to my answer being wrong.

                   ex1)He enjoys riding a bicycle.

                         He sings riding a bicycle.

                   ex2) My hobby is collecting coins.

                         My son is playing baseball.

                   ex3) a sleeping car = a car for sleeping

                         a sleeping child = a child who is sleeping

                   ex4) a walking stick = a stick for walking

                       a walking dictionary = a dictionary which is walking

               mind, doubt, stop, give up, quit, enjoy, finish,

               avoid, escape, delay,consider, suggest, admit,

               postpone, put off, practice, try, keep etc.

                   ex) I finished reading the detective novel last night.

                   ex) If it doesn't work, try pressing the green button.

             want, hope, decide, promise, plan, agree, ask,

             beg, wish, expect, promise, decide, plan, learn,

             fail, refuse etc.

                   ex) We promised to do exercises every day.

                   ex) I hope to be a famous movie star in future.
